The members of this London quartet, having performed together for over 20 years, thought about this lullabye project for some time. Everyone who hears this CD will be very glad that the group were able to bring this dream to fruition. The list of 23 cuts encompasses many genres including opera, jazz, folk-song and popular cinema. Cantabile's rendition of "Lullaby of Birdland" is fresh and unique. "Cancion de Cuna para dormir a un Negrito," a not-often-heard selection from contemporary composer Xavier Montsalvatge's "Cinco Canciones Negras (Five Black Songs)" is sung so tenderly, the listener is virtually transported cradle-side. No one familiar with this group will be surprised at their beautiful handling of the classical "Wiegenlied," but you have to hear their comical "Counting Up My Toes" to appreciate the range and appeal of this album. Most of us, like the four members of this quartet have "after all, paced the floor, babe in arms, singing all our various children (and often ourselves) to sleep..., " and will find this lovely music close to our hearts.
