Apes and Babes: Ra (CD)

This Norwegian mixed voice octet has an amazingly intelligent, unique, refreshing sound. They do covers of songs by a bunch of different artists (including Leonard Cohen and JS Bach) but totally make them their own with their fresh, original approach. Opening Norwegian folk tune "I fjor gjett' e gjet n i djupaste dalom" has a beautiful solo intro, with definite Celtic overtones, but morphs into a pretty cool contemporary dance tune. Destiny's Child's "Independent Women" is done VERY well here, with some smooth vocal percussion and vocal harmonies. Bach's "Toccata" is *loosely* based on the original classical work, but adds a funky dance beat, some synth-like voices and even some overtone singing to boot! "Baba Yaga" is an Indian-style raga but re-worked to sound like something off a Nine Inch Nails album. "She Moved Through the Fair" is a hauntingly beautiful cover of that traditional folk tune, complete with vocal bagpipes and celtic vocal stylings. "Killing Me Softly" is a respectable cover of the Fugees' cover of the Roberta Flack classic that features the strong women's voices in this group, but that also has that Apes & Babes "flavor," that extra "twist" that makes it different - and we like that! "Sex Bomb" features the bass and baritone of the group and totally lives up to its name- smooth, baby, yeah! The album ends with 80's classic "Rock Me Amadeus" - tongue in cheek? Maybe - but it's well done!
