Been Down to the Sea is an African-American spiritual celebrating the baptismal rite. This arrangement maintains the tradition of call and response with the baritone serving as leader. The syncopated rhythm of the recurring "Hallelujah" response gives the piece its jubilant character. The spiritual transformation of the celebrant at the words "I'm born of God, I know I am" occasions a new, higher key and an increase in rhythmic complexity. The ending suggests a quiet reflection on this important ritual in a convert's life.
